Kalis Nursery & Landscaping

Kalis Nursery & Landscaping is an exceptional nursery that was recommended by one of my readers. The nursery is located at Janda Baik, accessible via the foothills of Genting Highlands or Kampung Bukit Tinggi.

I found the place after asking some of the locals here for directions as it was my first time visiting Janda Baik. The air at this peaceful village is very fresh and cool and I noticed many attractive blooms dotting the gardens of some of the houses here.

Kalis Nursery & Landscaping was previously located in Gombak before its owner moved it here some six years ago. The nursery opens daily from 8.00am to 7.00pm.

There are about 50 types of heliconias, ginger, costus, ornamental musaca and water plants at this nursery. Besides that, they have lots of anthurium, canna and other shrubs. You will definitely learn about the many types and choices of heliconias, costus and ginger plants when you visit this nursery!

Also if you are interested in crab claw or lobster claw heliconias, you will find them here in various colours, such as pink, yellow, red and dark red.

The variety of costus and ginger plant are just as fascinating.

Ruby, a friend of Aida (the owner's wife), took me around and showed me all the special plants that they have. The whole nursery looks more like a botanical park than a commercial nursery. It is a nursery that is surely worth visiting especially if you are a fan of heliconias, costus and ginger plants.

The premises is so big that they even have a pond for fishing...

And a place for camping and campfire as well!

Plant Variety Rating: 4.5 | The varieties are confined mostly to specialised plants like heliconias and ginger plants. The rest of the plants are supplements, for landscaping services which they also provide.

While browsing around, I also noticed a variety of rattlesnake plants that come in different colours.

A few other plants that I find unique are the ornamental musa and chempaka telur (michelia pumila). They even have some beautiful hydrangeas :-D

The lotus and water lilies in these two ponds were in full bloom when I was there.

The other extraordinary plants that they have are bromeliads and calatheas.

Most of the heliconias are planted into the ground in this nursery. They will be uprooted for customers who purchase them.

These red and white torch gingers (pics below) really captivated my heart with their magnificent blooms.

I also spotted some beautiful Chinese hat, honeycomb and water canna plants in bloom.

Plant Condition Rating: 4.5 | The condition of most of the plants are very good.

If not because of its collector's item-like price tags, I would have brought home a few of these anthurims (pics below) which were looking bright and cheerful!

Layout Rating: 4 | As most of the plants are planted in the ground, the nursery looks like a park. The ones under the nursery net are mostly young plants.

It is a pleasant stroll browsing for plants at this nursery. If you looking for a heliconia for your garden, make sure you tour the entire nursery first as you will be overwhelmed by its varieties. They even have mini ones!

Garden Products Rating: N/A | As I was overly fascinated by the heliconias and ginger plants, I did not notice any pots or garden accessories!

The nursery is located at Kampung Cheringin in Janda Baik. When you get there, just ask around for the nursery. The people here are very friendly and they will direct you to the place. To view the map to Janda Baik, click here.

Not a fan of gingers, heliconias, bromeliads and such.
Particularly in any urban context or a postage stamp sized yard.

However, I declare that some look great in a green wet, cool, kind of place, such as this.

Congratulations. As I am in a critical mode permanently, when I see anything that makes me wonder/ponder, I feel a great joy, since it implies I am still alive and with open eyes/mind.

This nursery is really strange. Everything is in
context, harmony with the surroundings. Not many
owners are this wise, fortunate...to be able to match profits/beauty..

Thanks!
